Aeronautical Decision-Making: Is My Brain Trying to Kill Me?

For a skill that is so pivotal to one’s survival, it is ironic that we often leave the development of aeronautical decision-making to chance. The axiom “As you gain more experience, you will make better decisions” is clearly outdated. What are you doing to change this?

This course will review the tenets of aeronautical decision-making and explore how it is evolving. In-depth case studies of accidents will help students understand how decision-making occurs in dynamic situations. Students will also develop the building blocks for threat and error management skills.

Operational Risk Management

In this course, we teach operators techniques to help them identify hazards in their operational environment. We walk them through the steps to quantify those hazards as risk factors, and how to reflect those risks in a meaningful FRAT (flight risk assessment tool) format that sticks with the crew beyond preflight planning and becomes a viable in-flight methodology for identifying and managing emerging risks during flights. The tools we present further support post-flight risk data-gathering. We teach attendees how to use the data to identify trends or at-risk behaviors, and how to use the analysis to develop effective risk-management strategies.

SMS from the Top Down

Many aviation operations are already far along with establishing a formal safety management system (SMS) — they just don’t realize it. Most are aware of personal safety issues in the workplace. However, aviation professionals must also have the tools to recognize situations that would elevate risk as well as the ability to implement controls to effectively mitigate those risks. Learn to foster a positive safety culture for future success.
